This Astrological Timing Technique Can Show You the Themes of Your Year
An intro to annual profections and time lords
Annual profections are a timing technique that can determine the themes of your year by the age you are. Each age corresponds to a house of the zodiac. Houses represent areas of life, making this a simple way to zoom in on some major throughlines of your year ahead.
Example: Age 36 is a first house year, 37 a second, 38 a third, and so on.
So if I’m 37 and in a second house year, I’ll notice a bigger focus on my resources, values, income, needs, security, pleasure, possessions, and spending.
FYI: You start a different house year on each birthday, not with the new calendar year
By knowing what house year you’re in, you’ll see what area of life will be getting a lot of emphasis, change, and engagement in a given year and which planet will be the star of the show and your guide to work with.
Step 1: Find your age & house
First, find your current age on the wheel. At the center you should see the house number. We look to the house that’s associated with your current age to figure out what area of life will be getting a lot of action, change, and energy.
Note: Using the Whole Sign house system works best for this technique.
Next figure out what that house means.

Step 2: Figure out your Time Lord
Time lords are the second part of this astro technique. Time Lords sound intense, yes, be it’s just about the planet ruling your year.
Each house is ruled by a planet. The way we figure out which planet rules the house is by looking at which sign occupies the house. And the planetary ruler of that sign is the time lord for that year. So if you’re in a 9th House year and Aries occupies your 9th house, then your Time Lord is Mars.
♈ Aries - Mars
♉ Taurus- Venus
♊ Gemini- Mercury
♋ Cancer - Moon
♌ Leo - Sun
♍ Virgo - Mercury
♎ Libra - Venus
♏ Scorpio - Mars
♐ Sagittarius - Jupiter
♑ Capricorn - Saturn
♒ Aquarius - Saturn
♓ Pisces - Jupiter
How to work with all of this
We want to pay close attention to both the area of life (the House!) that our annual profection is highlights AND the ruling planet.
For example, I’m currently in a 3rd House year. Virgo occupies my 3rd House. The ruler of Virgo is Mercury, so Mercury is my Time Lord.
So I’ll be/am experiencing an uptick in action in the realms of my neighborhood, skills, siblings, curiosity, observation, dialogues, internet habits, and internet friends.
I also want to pay extra attention to what Mercury is doing throughout the year — all Mercury retrogrades and cazimis (conjunctions with the Sun) will carry extra weight for me.
Working with your Time Lord can be a great way to deepen your relationship to the planet and hone skills associated with it.
Consider learning more about the energy and strengths of your Time Lord planet or luminary.
In my Mercury-ruled year, I’ve shifted the way I create content, started a podcast (VERY Mercury), made special trips to see friends, started another tarot deck proposal, and created more daily habits in my neighborhood — just to name a few things!
In a Venus-ruled year you might be drawn to creativity, pleasure, or shifting your relationship dynamics.
A Moon-ruled year might focus on your emotional world, your natural rhythms, and what you need to feel comfortable.
A Saturn-ruled year might have you putting in the hard work, boundaries getting tested, and reaping rewards for a job well done.
So tell me: What year are you currently in and who’s your Time Lord?

Do you determine your house by the age you are at the start of the year or the majority of the year? I'm 43 but have a February birthday so I don't know if I'm an 8 or 9--or if I start the year an 8 and switch to a 9?
